2021 Ford Bronco vs 2020 Jeep Wrangler

Jeep Wrangler Sahara 2020

We suggest a comparison between the 2021 Ford Bronco to the 2020 Jeep Wrangler. At Des Sources Chrysler, your Jeep dealer in the West Island of Montreal, you can take a look at the complete lineup of 2020 Jeep Wrangler vehicles today as well as an exceptional selection of superb Jeep SUVs.

The return of a missing vehicle

The Bronco first appeared on the market in 1966. In 1996, Ford put it on the back burner in favour of its new SUVs like the Explorer and Escape.

Still alive

At the end of the Second World War, Willys, the manufacturer who made the Jeep for the U.S. military, had to consider closing its plant. The army no longer needed the all-terrain vehicle that served it so well. Willys then decides to turn its military vehicle into a civilian one. The predecessor of the Jeep Wrangler is an immediate success!

In 1987, the Wrangler YJ replaced its predecessors, the Jeep CJ models. Consumers immediately adopted it, and their loyalty to the Wrangler never wavered!

Bronco vs. Wrangler Design

No SUV has a design as legendary as the Wrangler. Its name and appearance resonate like hymns to freedom and adventure. The design of the 2021 Bronco is inspired by the 1st generation Bronco (1966 to 1978). Its very square design is far removed from the current aerodynamics of SUVs!

Bronco vs. Wrangler: 4x4 drive systems

The 2021 Bronco has only two 4x4 drive systems. The 1st has a part time selectable engagement. It offers 3 driving modes (sand, steep grades and heavy pulling) and a neutral position. In 4H mode, the second system continuously varies power to the front wheels to optimize traction.

The 2020 Wrangler's drive systems benefit from 75 years of expertise. In their long history, these systems have faced and conquered the sands of the Sahara, the jungles of the Pacific Islands, the torrential rains of the Asian monsoons, the rocky slopes of the Alps, and the chilling cold of Alaska.

Here's a brief description of the three 4x4 drive systems of the Jeep Wrangler:

  1. Command-Trac 4x4 has a gear ratio of less than 2.72:1 and its transfer case can be shifted from 2WD to 4WD mode at speeds of up to 72 km/h. The four-lock mode also distributes torque to the front and rear axles and the system has a Neutral mode.
  2. Selec-Trac 4x4 is available on the Sahara model of the 2020 Wrangler. Its 4x4 transfer case is always active and automatically transfers torque to the 4-wheel drive system. Its low range allows you to drive on slippery surfaces by proportionally increasing the torque at low speeds.
  3. Rock-Trac 4x4 is standard on the 2020 Wrangler Rubicon. It features Dana 44 heavy-duty axles, front and rear locking differentials, an electronic disconnecting sway bar and a 4:1 high gear ratio.

The Trail Rated badge

Every 2020 Jeep Wrangler proudly displays the Trail Rated badge. This certification, coveted by all 4x4 SUV manufacturers, confirms the Jeep Wrangler's off-road capability in terms of grip, fording, handling and ground clearance. The Ford Bronco did not earn this coveted badge.

Bronco vs. Wrangler Engines = advantage Wrangler!

When comparing the Bronco and Wrangler engines, the Ford Bronco offers a choice of two turbocharged engines: a 2.3-litre 4-cylinder that produces 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, and a 2.7-litre V6 that develops 310 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque.

On the other hand, the Wrangler also features a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine of 270 horsepower and a V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque to which eTorque adds 90 lb-ft for a total launch torque of 350 lb-ft, higher than the Ford Bronco's V6.

Coming soon: the Wrangler HEMI 392

The 2021 Wrangler will be for sale very soon at Des Sources Chrysler, close to Montreal. Its Rubicon version will be powered by a 392 engine, a 6.4-litre HEMI V8 that generates 450 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. No Bronco has that kind of power!

Price - a clear advantage for Wrangler

The Bronco is available in 6 versions. The suggested retail price (MSRP) of the base Bronco is $40,499 and that of its top-range model, the Wildtrack, is $58,494.

The Wrangler is offered in 12 models and the MSRP of its base model, the Wrangler Sport, is just $33,481 while that of its top-range version, the Unlimited Rubicon, is only $47,135.

Bronco vs. Wrangler: conclusion

The 2020 Wrangler wins with the following:

  1. Choice of 12 models instead of only 6 for the Bronco,
  2. Substantially lower suggested selling prices than those of the Bronco,
  3. 3 proven drive systems,
  4. Its legendary and unique design,
  5. Its powerful engines.
